If you're interested in diplomacy, you've probably heard of the terms National Conference and Model United Nations. Indeed, on numerous campuses, these two conferences exist enough not just for students majoring in International Relations, but also for the entire institution. However, did you know that these two conferences are not the same?
According to the definition, the National Conference is a conference where participants will discuss topics connected to the Sustainable Development Goals and will negotiate with other participants to arrive at the best feasible solution to be implemented.
Meanwhile, MUN itself is an abbreviation of Model United Nations, which means Simulation of the United Nations Assembly. Here, participants acted as representatives of countries in international forums and were divided into certain councils. The final product of this simulation is a draft resolution like the general UN session, where delegates who play more roles in the council will get awards.
What is the difference between these two, though? The first difference is that the National Conference's flow is less formal and expert than MUN's; even those of you with no prior conference experience are welcome to participate because there will be a training period on topics and public speaking. There are also some differences: in the National Conference, motion or discussion agendas are determined by the conference leaders and committees, whereas MUN motions are chosen by the delegates. Other than that, unlike MUN, each team at the National Conference will propose a solution rather than per block or chamber.
Furthermore, the awarding of the two conferences is also different! MUN has many awards, such as Best Delegate, Most Outstanding Delegate, Honorable Mention, Verbal Commendation, and Best Position Paper. The National Conference, on the other hand, only features one award, Best Team. Lastly, the very important thing is that at the SxCs 11th GrandSummit, the National Conference will be held using Indonesian.
Now you know more about the National Conference and how it differs from MUN. So, are you interested in joining StudentsxCEOs 11th Grand Summit National Conference?
